AI Adoption Accelerates Across U.S. Factories

A new report by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) indicates that more than half of U.S. manufacturers plan to boost artificial intelligence (AI) investments over the next two years. The study, “Shaping the AI-Powered Factory of the Future,” highlights how AI is becoming integral to addressing labor shortages, improving product quality, and maintaining competitiveness.

“The report reinforces the need for modernized, agile, pro-manufacturing AI policy so that manufacturers can continue to innovate on shop floors across America,” says Jay Timmons, president and CEO of NAM. “We look forward to continuing to champion AI leadership and manufacturing in America, which starts with adopting a pro-AI regulatory framework and pursuing policies that bolster innovation.”

A Call for Pro-Manufacturing AI Policies

Timmons stressed that AI leadership in manufacturing requires an updated policy framework—one that streamlines compliance, ensures transparency, and aligns workforce, energy, and privacy rules with the realities of smart manufacturing.

    The NAM study revealed:

    • 51% of U.S. manufacturers currently use AI in operations.
    • 61% expect to increase AI investments by 2027.
    • By 2030, 80% predict AI will be essential to their growth and sustainability.

    Data Challenges Remain a Barrier

Despite growing interest, manufacturers cite data quality and accessibility as major obstacles.

    • 65% lack the right data for AI applications.

    • 62% struggle with unstructured or poorly formatted data, slowing automation adoption.

This underlines the need for industry-wide data standardization and supportive regulatory frameworks.

Global Manufacturing Trends Mirror U.S. Push

A parallel study by Rockwell Automation Inc. reveals that 95% of global manufacturers are investing in AI to handle disruptions and accelerate smart manufacturing initiatives.

“The combined potential of people and technology will shape our collective future,” said Blake Moret, chairman and CEO of Rockwell Automation.

Key findings from Rockwell’s research include:

    • 81% of manufacturers cite internal and external pressures as driving digital transformation.

    • AI, cybersecurity, and quality management are top investment priorities.

    • 41% are using AI to bridge the labor skills gap, while 50% deploy AI for product quality improvement.

    Strengthening U.S. Manufacturing Competitiveness

AI-driven smart manufacturing is not only improving operational efficiency but also helping U.S. manufacturers remain competitive globally. However, experts stress that sustained leadership requires agile policies that encourage innovation, ensure data quality, and support workforce readiness.

Primary Keywords: AI in manufacturing, NAM AI report, smart manufacturing policy, AI factory automation, U.S. manufacturing innovation
Secondary Keywords: Rockwell Automation AI study, AI-driven quality control, manufacturing labor shortages, pro-manufacturing AI regulations
