Intel’s AI Reshuffle Signals Bold New Era Under Lip-Bu Tan

    By April 22, 2025Updated:August 9, 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

What happens when a semiconductor giant decides to go all-in on AI?
At Intel, it starts with a leadership shake-up. Sachin Katti has been named the new CTO and Head of AI, signaling a sharper and more focused AI-first strategy under incoming CEO Lip-Bu Tan.

Who is Sachin Katti and why does it matter?
Katti previously led Intel’s networking and edge division, where he pushed the envelope on distributed computing and real-time AI applications. Now, as CTO, he’ll guide Intel’s entire AI roadmap—from silicon and systems to software ecosystems. That includes oversight of Intel Labs, as well as forming AI partnerships across academia and industry.

    What’s changing structurally at Intel?
The company is flattening its org chart to speed up decision-making and cut bureaucracy. Senior leaders like Robert Bruckner, Mike Hurley, and Lisa Pearce will report directly to Tan. Intel’s AI efforts—once spread across data center, client, and research teams—are now being consolidated under Katti for end-to-end execution.

    Who’s stepping down?
Former CTO Greg Lavender, who held the role since 2021, is exiting as part of this leadership transition. Lavender played a key role in positioning Intel in the AI arms race, but the baton is now passed to a new generation focused on aggressive scale and agility.

    What about external strategy?
Intel is also rethinking its approach to global AI policy. With Bruce Andrews departing his government affairs role post-U.S. elections, the company appears to be recalibrating how it engages with policymakers—especially as AI becomes a geopolitical priority.

    Why now?
This pivot comes at a critical time. The AI race is heating up across hardware and compute infrastructure, with competitors like NVIDIA and AMD sprinting ahead. Intel’s response? Get leaner, move faster, and bet big on unified AI leadership.

What could this mean for the industry?
With Lip-Bu Tan—known for bold bets in semiconductors and deep tech—at the helm, Intel’s new direction could reshape its identity from chipmaker to AI powerhouse. The consolidation of AI talent, research, and product under one vision could speed up innovation in CPUs, GPUs, accelerators, and edge AI deployments.

    Bottom line?
Intel is no longer just talking AI. With Sachin Katti steering the tech and Tan soon leading the business, they’re building a structure to make AI central to everything—from silicon to strategy.
