This division, the company’s largest, was instrumental in training the Grok chatbot by labeling and contextualizing raw data. The layoffs, announced via email on September 12, 2025, mark a strategic pivot towards hiring specialist AI tutors with domain-specific expertise.
xAI’s data annotation team, often referred to as generalist AI tutors, played a crucial role in preparing datasets for Grok’s training. However, the company has decided to scale back these generalist roles in favor of specialists who can provide deeper insights into specific fields. An internal memo stated, “After a thorough review of our Human Data efforts, we’ve decided to accelerate the expansion and prioritization of our specialist AI tutors, while scaling back our focus on general AI tutor roles”

Affected employees were informed of their termination via email and had their access to company systems revoked immediately. Despite the abrupt nature of the layoffs, xAI assured that employees would be compensated through the end of their contracts or until November 30, whichever came first
