The DEWALT POWERSHIFT™ System represents the future of sustainable solutions the concrete industry needs

DEWALT, a Stanley Black & Decker brand, has unveiled the world’s first downward drilling, fleet-capable robotic system designed specifically to accelerate large-scale data center construction. Developed in collaboration with August Robotics, the autonomous solution addresses the surging demand for AI-driven computing infrastructure by significantly improving speed, accuracy, and safety in concrete drilling operations.

Rapid Expansion of Global Data Center Infrastructure

With more than 400 data centers currently under development worldwide, hyperscalers are racing to expand capacity to support artificial intelligence workloads. These operators account for nearly 80% of global data center demand, with industry-wide capital expenditure projected to reach $7 trillion by 2030. Construction speed has emerged as a critical constraint, driving demand for advanced automation on jobsites.

Operational Details: Autonomous Drilling at Scale

Powered by August Robotics’ autonomous drilling and fleet orchestration platform, the DEWALT robotic system is capable of drilling at speeds up to ten times faster than traditional methods. The robot has been piloted across ten data center construction phases for a leading hyperscaler, achieving 99.97% drilling accuracy across more than 90,000 holes.

The system automates a critical construction stage by drilling thousands of holes required for server rack stops and structural supports for overhead mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Its fleet-capable design enables multiple robots to operate simultaneously, unlocking greater drilling capacity and reducing labor dependency.

Economic Impact and Construction Efficiency

Deployment of the robotic drilling solution has resulted in an 80-week reduction in construction timelines across pilot projects. In addition to schedule acceleration, the system has lowered cost per hole while improving consistency and reducing rework. Enhanced jobsite safety is achieved by minimizing worker exposure to vibration, dust, and repetitive overhead drilling tasks.

Strategic Significance for AI Infrastructure Development

The robotic solution strengthens DEWALT’s broader data center construction ecosystem, which includes PERFORM AND PROTECT™ tools and technologies as well as industry-leading ICC anchoring systems. Together, these offerings support faster, safer, and more reliable delivery of hyperscale data centers critical to AI computing growth.

The solution is expected to be commercially available by mid-2026 and will be demonstrated at the World of Concrete® Trade Show in Las Vegas from January 20–22.

Leadership Perspective

DEWALT and Stanley Black & Decker leadership emphasized that construction speed is now a decisive factor for hyperscalers investing in AI infrastructure. The autonomous drilling robot addresses this need through schedule compression, cost efficiency, near-perfect accuracy, and improved jobsite safety, redefining productivity standards in large-scale construction.
