Genesee Water and Sanitation District (GWSD) has strengthened the security and efficiency of its water and wastewater operations through a partnership with InflexionPoint, addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities while improving remote connectivity and operational visibility across its distributed infrastructure in Colorado.
Established in 1973, GWSD provides water and sewer services to communities and facilities across Genesee. The district operates a state-of-the-art water treatment plant with built-in redundancies and continuously monitors water quality, pressure, disinfection standards, and equipment across eight water and wastewater stations.
As GWSD sought to improve remote connectivity to its SCADA system, the district encountered challenges with its existing technology support. A subsequent review identified inconsistent system updates and patching, along with significant cybersecurity vulnerabilities that could affect operational reliability.
InflexionPoint deployed an operations security team to assess the environment and address the identified issues. Engineers resolved connectivity challenges and discovered that GWSD’s firewall maintenance and support subscription had not been renewed for several years. Although the firewall remained operational, outdated threat intelligence and software had reduced its effectiveness.
The assessment also uncovered evidence of repeated brute-force hacking attempts against the exposed system. InflexionPoint updated the affected systems and strengthened the district’s security posture, helping reduce the risk of potential future intrusions while restoring reliable remote connectivity.
The partnership has delivered secure web connectivity across the enterprise, enabling more efficient remote operations and providing GWSD with stronger oversight of its critical infrastructure. InflexionPoint has also continued supporting the district through proactive troubleshooting, on-site assistance, system planning, and technology recommendations aligned with business needs.
The case demonstrates how cybersecurity, reliable connectivity, and operational expertise are increasingly interconnected within critical water infrastructure. For utilities managing essential services around the clock, greater visibility and proactive security can play a critical role in maintaining safe, stable, and efficient operations.
