Marelli has received the “Commendable” honor in the Engineering Product of the Year category at the Digital Engineering Awards 2026, recognizing its innovative Zone Control Unit (ZCU) for advancing vehicle electrical and electronic architecture. The awards ceremony, hosted by L&T Technology Services in association with Information Services Group and CNBC-TV18, took place in Boston, United States on March 12, 2026.
The ZCU was recognized for simplifying vehicle electrical and electronic (E/E) systems while accelerating the shift toward software-defined vehicles. The technology consolidates multiple control functions into a single electronic control unit, enabling seamless communication across vehicle zones and improving system efficiency.

According to Ravi Tallapragada, President of Marelli’s Electronics business, the recognition highlights the company’s efforts to support the industry’s transition to software-defined vehicles. The platform enables automakers to innovate faster through scalable cross-domain control while maintaining safety and performance.
The Zone Control Unit incorporates next-generation Ethernet capabilities, virtualization technologies, hardware accelerators, and safety-compliant software to support modern vehicle connectivity and data processing demands. It also supports 48-volt system requirements and integrates remote-control protocols to enhance functionality and flexibility.
Built on Marelli’s EliteZone platform, the ZCU can reduce wiring harness weight by around 30 percent compared with traditional architectures by replacing multiple dedicated electronic control units and simplifying wiring layouts. This design improves efficiency while reducing system complexity in next-generation vehicles.
Using a service-oriented architecture, the ZCU enables different vehicle modules to exchange services through a unified system, allowing automakers to scale features across vehicle platforms and shorten development cycles. With capabilities supporting up to ASIL-D safety standards, the technology positions Marelli as a key contributor to the evolution of connected and software-driven mobility.
