Keeping Lawns Green in a Thirsty Summer

As Chicago experiences an unusually warm and dry summer, local lawn care specialist Dr. Green Services is stepping in to help homeowners safeguard their lawns with practical, water-wise advice. The company emphasizes that smart watering—not necessarily more watering—is the key to thriving grass during drought conditions.

    Watering with Precision, Not Excess

According to Marc Harris, Operations Manager at Dr. Green Services, homeowners often misunderstand the signs of lawn stress. “Watering correctly can make all the difference in lawn health during dry weather,” says Harris. To educate the public, the company has released a blog titled Watering Best Practices for Lawns, which outlines region-specific tips, such as:

    • Water between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. to minimize evaporation and reduce fungal growth.
    • Deliver 1 to 1.5 inches of water weekly, including rainfall.
    • Avoid daily light watering, which causes shallow roots.
    • Use a rain gauge or moisture meter to measure water intake precisely.

    Dormancy Isn’t Death

Dr. Green Services also seeks to clarify a common misconception: brown or dry grass doesn’t always mean it’s dead. “In many cases, lawns are simply in dormancy,” Harris explains. Dormancy is a natural survival mechanism where grass slows its growth and conserves resources.

“Watering correctly can make all the difference in lawn health during dry weather,” says Marc Harris, Operations Manager at Dr. Green Services. “Understanding when and how to water helps homeowners protect their lawns, conserve water, and avoid common mistakes.“

Over 30 Years of Local Lawn Expertise

With more than three decades of service across Chicago, Dr. Green Services is trusted for tailored solutions, including fertilization, weed control, and seasonal care. The company closely monitors weather conditions in different neighborhoods to provide real-time, location-specific guidance.
