Fusion Fuel Cycles Inc. (FFC) has announced a $20 million investment from General Atomics (GA) to accelerate the development of its UNITY-2 project, the world’s first fully integrated fusion fuel cycle platform. The investment will be distributed over ten years and underscores the global importance of advancing fusion energy technologies.

Established in 2024 as a joint venture between Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and Kyoto Fusioneering, FFC is dedicated to closing critical technology gaps in the fusion energy sector. The UNITY-2 system aims to serve as a globally unique testing facility for fuel cycle components, helping to advance the readiness of fusion technologies for future commercial deployment.
Strategic Investment
The investment agreement allows GA to utilize UNITY-2 to develop and validate its own fusion components under realistic operational conditions. According to Yuhei Nozoe, Co-CEO of FFC, only by testing beyond models and simulations can the risks of fuel cycle components be minimized, a vital step toward realizing commercial fusion.
Global Collaboration
This international partnership has been facilitated by the Government of Canada’s Industrial and Technological Advantage (ITB) policy, which promotes collaboration through procurement agreements. Dr. Ian Castillo, Co-CEO of FFC, highlighted the project as an example of how ITB fosters innovation and strengthens Canada’s position in the global clean energy sector.
Industry Impact
General Atomics, renowned for its role as operator of the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in the United States, brings decades of fusion research leadership. The collaboration between GA and FFC is expected to accelerate breakthroughs in tritium handling, fuel efficiency, and heat transfer—key challenges in making fusion energy a viable commercial reality.
Broader Mission
FFC combines over 70 years of Canadian tritium expertise with Kyoto Fusioneering’s advanced fusion technologies, positioning itself as a vital enabler of the global fusion ecosystem. By delivering end-to-end fuel cycle solutions, FFC supports the industry’s goal of achieving safe, clean, and limitless energy.
