Dr. Semmel is Director Emeritus of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), where he served as director from 2010 to 2025. Under his leadership, APL grew into a $2.7 billion per year enterprise with nearly 10,000 staff conducting research for the Department of Defense, NASA, the Intelligence Community, and federal agencies.
Operational and Academic Background
Before leading APL, Dr. Semmel held senior roles including founding head of the Applied Information Sciences Department and business area executive for Infocentric Operations. His career also includes leadership positions at Wang Laboratories, MITRE Corporation, and the U.S. Army. In academia, he chaired graduate engineering programs and taught at Johns Hopkins University.
