Chery TIGGO9 Demonstrates Unmatched Safety in South Africa Crash Test

Flagship SUV maintains cabin integrity, reinforcing Chery’s global safety standards

Both TIGGO9 models maintain structural integrity after collision

Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. has set a new benchmark in automotive safety with its flagship TIGGO9 SUV, which successfully passed a rigorous head-on crash test in South Africa. Conducted on August 20, the test involved two TIGGO9 models colliding at 50 km/h with a fifty percent offset, showcasing the vehicle’s advanced engineering and commitment to passenger protection.

    Proven Structural Resilience

Despite the high-impact collision, both TIGGO9 cabins remained intact, with no deformation of the A, B, or C pillars. The SUVs’ 85% high-strength steel body — including 21% hot-formed steel in key areas — absorbed and dissipated crash energy effectively. Safety systems activated instantly, with ten airbags, seat belt pretensioners, and automatic hazard warning lights ensuring comprehensive occupant protection.

    Engineering Innovations

The crash test highlighted Chery’s investment in cutting-edge design, including double aluminum impact beams, six impact boxes, and a 2060mm side airbag capable of maintaining over 50% pressure for six seconds. A center airbag between the front seats further reduced risks of secondary impact, emphasizing Chery’s pursuit of five-star safety across global markets.

    Global Safety Milestone

This achievement marks a critical step in Chery’s six-dimensional safety challenge, following extreme-environment tests in Indonesia and Mexico. As the first Chinese automaker to export five million vehicles and a recent entrant into the Fortune Global 500, Chery continues to uphold its philosophy of “Safety for the Family.”

Launch and Social Commitment in South Africa

Coinciding with the crash test, Chery officially launched the TIGGO9 in South Africa, reinforcing its strategy of “In Africa, for Africa.” The company also announced a partnership with UNICEF, unveiling the Champion for Education in Africa forum and pledging to build Hope Primary Schools to support local communities.

    Strategic Significance

The successful crash test and product launch signal Chery’s determination to compete globally with leading automakers, blending robust safety engineering with a strong social responsibility agenda. The TIGGO9’s entry into South Africa underscores Chery’s role as a mobility innovator dedicated to quality, safety, and community impact worldwide.
