Kia America and Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) have officially announced the start of production for the 2027 Kia Sportage Hybrid at their advanced manufacturing facility in Georgia, USA. The milestone represents a key step in the company’s strategy to expand hybrid and electric vehicle production within a highly flexible manufacturing ecosystem.

The launch also marks three major achievements for the plant: its first Kia model, its first hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and the third vehicle model to be assembled at the facility.

Expansion of Hybrid and EV Manufacturing Portfolio

The Kia Sportage Hybrid joins the existing production lineup at HMGMA, which already includes the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9 electric vehicles. This integration highlights Hyundai Motor Group’s ability to manufacture multiple propulsion systems—electric, hybrid, and internal combustion—on a single production platform.

The plant has been designed with flexible manufacturing capabilities, allowing it to produce up to 10 different vehicle models with minimal modifications to production lines. This adaptability positions the facility as a key hub for next-generation automotive manufacturing.

Strategic Importance of the Georgia Metaplant

The Georgia-based Metaplant represents a major investment in advanced automotive production and reflects the growing importance of the United States in global electric and hybrid vehicle manufacturing.

According to company leadership, the facility demonstrates strong collaboration between Kia America, Hyundai Motor Group, and the local workforce. The plant is expected to play a significant role in strengthening regional manufacturing capacity and supporting long-term job creation in the state.

Leadership Highlights Manufacturing and Market Expansion

During the announcement, Kia North America and Kia America President and CEO Sean Yoon emphasized the significance of the milestone for both the company and its U.S. customer base. He noted that the Metaplant reflects long-term confidence in Georgia as a growing automotive manufacturing hub.

HMGMA leadership also highlighted the role of advanced automation systems and workforce training in enabling efficient production of hybrid and electric vehicles at scale.

Advanced Automation and Smart Manufacturing Integration

The production launch showcased Hyundai Motor Group’s emphasis on smart manufacturing technologies, including automation systems and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). These technologies are integrated into the production environment to improve efficiency, precision, and operational flow.

The demonstration of the first Sportage Hybrid included an AMR transporting the vehicle during the unveiling, highlighting the plant’s focus on robotics-enabled manufacturing processes.

Workforce Development and Knowledge Transfer

The transition to hybrid vehicle production involved extensive training and collaboration across Kia’s global manufacturing network. Employees from Georgia and South Korea participated in knowledge-sharing programs to ensure production quality and operational consistency.

The facility currently employs thousands of workers, contributing significantly to local economic development and industrial growth in the region.

Strengthening Kia’s U.S. Manufacturing Footprint

Kia continues to expand its manufacturing presence in the United States, with multiple models already being produced across its Georgia-based facilities. The addition of the Sportage Hybrid further strengthens the company’s SUV portfolio and aligns with its broader electrification strategy.

The company aims to increase production capacity while accelerating the transition toward hybrid and electric mobility solutions for the U.S. market.

Strategic Significance

The start of Sportage Hybrid production at HMGMA underscores a broader transformation in global automotive manufacturing, where flexibility, electrification, and automation are becoming central to production strategy.

By integrating hybrid and electric vehicle production within a single advanced facility, Hyundai Motor Group is positioning itself at the forefront of smart manufacturing and sustainable mobility. The development also reinforces the growing importance of the U.S. as a key hub for automotive innovation and production
