The future of laboratory automation is entering a new phase as ABB Robotics and Roche Diagnostics have announced a global collaboration to develop next-generation robotic solutions for clinical laboratories. By combining ABB’s expertise in AI-powered robotics with Roche’s leadership in diagnostics, the partnership aims to introduce intelligent, digitally connected laboratories that are more flexible, efficient, and responsive to the growing demands of modern healthcare.

The collaboration represents a significant step toward integrating Physical AI into laboratory environments, enabling robots to perform complex tasks, adapt to changing workflows, and support laboratory professionals by automating repetitive processes.

Addressing Growing Challenges in Clinical Diagnostics

Healthcare systems worldwide are facing increasing pressure as diagnostic testing volumes continue to rise. With approximately 70% of medical treatment decisions relying on laboratory diagnostics, clinical laboratories are managing growing workloads while also dealing with workforce shortages, aging populations, and increasing demand for personalized medicine.

The ABB-Roche collaboration seeks to address these challenges by deploying intelligent robotic automation that enhances operational efficiency while allowing laboratory professionals to focus on higher-value clinical analysis and patient care.

Bringing Physical AI into Laboratory Operations

At the heart of the collaboration is the application of Physical AI, where robots learn from real-world environments and adapt to dynamic operational conditions rather than performing only fixed, pre-programmed tasks.

ABB Robotics will leverage its portfolio of AI-powered industrial robots, collaborative robots, and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), coordinated through intelligent software, to automate laboratory workflows while maintaining the flexibility required in modern diagnostic environments.

This approach enables laboratories to improve consistency, reduce manual handling, and create more connected diagnostic ecosystems.

Initial Focus on Pathology and Core Laboratory Automation

The first phase of the partnership will concentrate on two critical areas of laboratory operations.

For Roche’s pathology division, ABB Robotics will develop intelligent robotic solutions capable of handling and organizing pathology slides. Automating slide movement and management will help laboratories transition toward more digital workflows while improving efficiency and reducing manual intervention.

Within core clinical laboratories, autonomous mobile manipulators will transport samples and laboratory materials between diagnostic instruments. These mobile robotic systems will improve connectivity between testing equipment, streamline intralogistics, and accelerate sample processing while reducing workflow bottlenecks.

Together, these applications are expected to enhance laboratory throughput, improve operational flexibility, and support faster diagnostic decision-making.

Combining Robotics and Diagnostic Expertise

Under the collaboration, ABB Robotics will lead the development of industrial-grade laboratory automation solutions, drawing upon its extensive expertise in robotics, AI, industrial automation, and global manufacturing.

Roche Diagnostics will contribute its deep understanding of laboratory operations, clinical diagnostics, and application-specific workflows to ensure that robotic systems are designed to meet the practical needs of healthcare professionals.

The combined expertise aims to deliver scalable solutions suitable for laboratories of varying sizes while supporting increasingly complex diagnostic requirements.

Supporting the Next Generation of Connected Laboratories

The partnership reflects a broader transformation occurring across healthcare, where digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and automation are reshaping laboratory operations.

Connected laboratories capable of autonomous sample movement, intelligent workflow coordination, and adaptive robotics can significantly improve testing efficiency while helping healthcare providers respond more quickly to growing patient demands.

By automating routine handling tasks, laboratories can improve operational consistency, reduce human error, and maximize the productivity of skilled laboratory personnel.

Advancing the Future of Healthcare Automation

ABB’s broader robotics strategy centers on expanding the use of Autonomous Versatile Robotics (AVR™)—intelligent robotic systems capable of operating across diverse industrial and service environments through AI-driven adaptability.

The collaboration with Roche extends this strategy into healthcare, demonstrating how Physical AI can move beyond manufacturing and logistics to support critical clinical operations.

As laboratories continue embracing digital transformation, intelligent robotics is expected to become an essential component of future diagnostic infrastructure, enabling faster workflows, greater operational resilience, and improved patient outcomes.

Looking Ahead

The ABB Robotics and Roche Diagnostics collaboration marks an important milestone in the evolution of healthcare automation. By combining AI-powered robotics with advanced diagnostic expertise, the two companies are laying the foundation for a new generation of connected clinical laboratories that are more intelligent, efficient, and adaptable.

As diagnostic demand continues to grow globally, Physical AI-enabled laboratory automation has the potential to transform clinical workflows, strengthen healthcare systems, and accelerate the delivery of accurate diagnoses that support better patient care.
