CivAI, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering public understanding of artificial intelligence, has unveiled a groundbreaking AI voice game titled We Need to Talk. The interactive demo showcases how AI can simulate deeply human conversations, highlighting both its potential and its societal implications.
While AI tools have rapidly integrated into everyday life, many people remain indifferent to their broader impact. CivAI aims to shift that perspective through live demonstrations that make AI’s capabilities—and risks—tangible. With We Need to Talk, the organization leverages real-time AI voice technology to bring this mission to life.
Operational Details
The game allows users to engage in authentic voice conversations with AI characters who laugh, cry, whisper, and argue in response to player input. Players advance by persuading AI personalities to change their viewpoints, showcasing the ability of current AI models to emulate emotions and complex reasoning.
The experience unfolds across two distinct paths:
- Heart to Heart – emotionally charged dialogues, such as reconnecting with an estranged father.
- The Orion Project – a narrative exploring ethical dilemmas around superhuman AI development.
Economic and Educational Impact
Beyond entertainment, the game functions as a public education tool, preparing society to grapple with the ethical and decision-making challenges posed by advanced AI. CivAI has already conducted over 100 private briefings for civil society organizations and government bodies, covering issues such as cyber risks, deepfakes, and biological threats.
Strategic Significance
“We’re trying to overcome the indifference many people have around AI,” said Lucas Hansen, co-founder of CivAI.“ChatGPT can be very stupid, so it’s easy to miss the forest for the trees. Having an authentic voice conversation with an AI—one that expresses emotions, makes intelligent arguments, and seems to have its own wants and desires—that is an eye-opening experience. Our goal with this game is to give people a deeply personal understanding of how impactful AI will be.”
