Zurich has steadily emerged as one of the most compelling locations in the world to build and scale a robotics company. The city combines elite engineering talent, strong research institutions, deep-tech-friendly capital, and immediate access to global industrial leaders. At the center of this ecosystem is ETH Zürich, widely regarded as one of the world’s top universities for robotics, AI, and autonomous systems, and a proven launchpad for venture-backed robotics startups.

Beyond academia, Zurich benefits from proximity to frontier research organizations such as Disney Research and the RAI Institute, helping startups stay aligned with cutting-edge developments in physical AI. Switzerland’s industrial base—home to global automation leaders like ABB Robotics—offers startups early customers, validation partners, and real-world deployment opportunities. Combined with political stability, quality of life, and central European access, Zurich has become a magnet for robotics founders and talent alike.

ANYbotics

ANYbotics develops autonomous four-legged robots designed for industrial inspection, monitoring, and maintenance in hazardous environments. Its flagship robot, ANYmal, is deployed across energy, mining, oil and gas, and chemical facilities worldwide. Spun out of ETH Zürich, the company has become one of Europe’s most prominent robotics scale-ups, raising over $150 million in funding and demonstrating how advanced legged robotics can deliver real industrial value at scale.

Gravis Robotics

Gravis Robotics focuses on autonomy systems that transform heavy construction and earth-moving machines into intelligent, self-driving robots. By combining AI, perception, and control software, the company enables autonomous excavation and material handling in construction and mining environments. With approximately $27 million raised to date, Gravis Robotics addresses labor shortages and safety challenges in heavy industries while pushing the boundaries of large-scale robotic autonomy.

Verity

Verity builds autonomous indoor drones that automate inventory tracking in warehouses and distribution centers. Its drone systems operate safely alongside human workers, scanning inventory continuously without disrupting operations. Founded as an ETH Zürich spin-off, Verity has raised over $60 million and serves global logistics and retail customers. The company demonstrates how aerial robotics can deliver immediate ROI in high-volume warehouse environments.

mimic

mimic develops AI-powered robotic picking systems optimized for fast, reliable item handling in warehouses and logistics centers. Its technology focuses on combining advanced perception with adaptive grasping to handle a wide variety of products. By addressing one of the most complex problems in warehouse automation—robust item picking—mimic supports e-commerce and logistics operators seeking higher throughput, reduced errors, and scalable automation.

Bota Systems AG

Bota Systems AG specializes in high-precision force-torque sensors and intelligent sensing software that give robots real-time tactile awareness. Its technology enables more delicate, adaptive, and human-like manipulation across industrial and collaborative robotics applications. Acquired by ABB Robotics, Bota Systems’ innovations now play a critical role in advancing intelligent manipulation, making robots safer and more capable in complex, real-world tasks.

Duatic

Duatic develops advanced human-scale robotic arms and mobile manipulation systems designed for flexible industrial and service applications. The company focuses on combining mechanical design with intelligent control to enable robots to work safely and efficiently alongside humans. Duatic’s approach reflects Zurich’s strength in mechatronics and applied robotics, targeting environments where adaptability and precision are more valuable than rigid automation.

RIVR

RIVR builds autonomous wheeled-legged robots designed for last-mile doorstep delivery. By combining wheels for efficiency and legs for obstacle navigation, RIVR’s robots are engineered to operate in real urban environments. Backed by approximately $22 million in seed funding, the company applies physical AI to logistics challenges, addressing labor constraints and rising delivery demands in cities across Europe and beyond.

Flexion Robotics

Flexion Robotics develops the autonomous AI “brain” and full software stack for humanoid robots. Its platform focuses on perception, decision-making, and control, enabling humanoids to perform complex tasks in dynamic environments. With around $50 million raised, Flexion Robotics positions itself at the intersection of AI and embodied intelligence, contributing to the next generation of general-purpose humanoid robotic systems.

FORGIS

FORGIS develops AI-powered edge software that enables industrial machines and factory systems to operate autonomously and intelligently. The company focuses on real-time decision-making at the machine level, reducing latency and improving operational efficiency. With approximately €3.8 million in pre-seed funding, FORGIS addresses the growing demand for smart, self-optimizing industrial infrastructure in modern manufacturing environments.

Voliro

Voliro builds autonomous aerial robots specifically designed for industrial inspection and maintenance tasks. Its drones feature a unique tilting-rotor design that allows stable contact with surfaces, enabling close-range inspection and interaction. Having raised around $23 million in Series A funding, Voliro serves sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and heavy industry, where traditional inspection methods are costly and risky.

Sevensense

Sevensense developed AI-powered 3D vision navigation technology for autonomous mobile robots operating in complex, dynamic environments. Its solutions enable robots to navigate reliably without relying on fixed infrastructure. Founded in Zurich, Sevensense’s technology gained significant industry traction, leading to its acquisition by ABB Robotics in January 2024, further reinforcing Zurich’s role as a cradle for globally relevant robotics innovation.
