Electra.aero has been selected as the inaugural private-sector participant in the Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing and Advanced Air Mobility Integration Pilot Program (eIPP) launched by the United States Department of Transportation in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration. The initiative aims to accelerate the safe deployment of advanced air mobility (AAM) aircraft through public-private partnerships with state and local governments.

The Virginia-based aerospace company will demonstrate real-world operations of its hybrid-electric Ultra Short aircraft, the nine-passenger Electra EL9 Ultra Short. Designed to take off and land in just 150 feet, the aircraft introduces a new concept known as Direct Aviation, enabling travel between urban and regional locations without relying on traditional airports.

According to Marc Allen, the program represents a milestone for the AAM industry, allowing companies to work closely with government partners to develop operational frameworks and regulations that support the safe integration of next-generation aircraft into national airspace.

Electra plans to collaborate with regional authorities on several demonstration projects. In Florida, the company will work with the Florida Department of Transportation to test routes connecting urban centers with regional destinations. Additional initiatives include a proposed corridor linking New York City and New Jersey with support from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, as well as a Pennsylvania-led demonstration connecting Atlantic City to regional destinations such as Philadelphia.

Electra’s Ultra Short technology combines hybrid-electric propulsion, reduced noise, and improved operational efficiency, enabling regional trips between 50 and 500 miles while using existing aviation infrastructure. The company aims to expand access to air travel while meeting key AAM requirements, including quiet operations, practical range, meaningful payload capacity, and uncompromising safety.

With demonstrations planned across multiple U.S. regions, Electra’s participation in the program highlights a growing push to bring next-generation air mobility systems closer to commercial reality.
