Productivity Gains Lie in Hi-Tech Universities

Our nation’s growth isn’t a mystery; it’s a simple equation: invest in people, invest in ideas. And where do you find the ultimate combination of both? Our universities.

While the government discusses economic reform, let’s look at the powerhouse we already have at our fingertips. Australia is wrestling with some big challenges—stalled productivity, rising living costs, and a shifting global landscape. We can’t solve these problems with old-school tactics.

The real solution isn’t just about policy; it’s about a fundamental shift in how we educate and innovate. We need to close the gap between the classroom and the workplace, creating a dynamic cycle where education fuels industry, and industry informs education.

This isn’t just a theory; it’s the core mission of the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN). Our approach is proven, and it delivers measurable results for both students and the Australian economy.

Education That Works in the Real World

We’re moving beyond traditional learning models. RMIT University, for example, has pioneered an “Earn and Learn” program where students get paid work experience while they study. Meanwhile, the University of Newcastle ensures every single undergraduate gets hands-on, industry-integrated learning before they graduate. These models aren’t new—they’re a powerful return to a successful past.

Another shining example is the Commonwealth Trailblazers program. Initiatives like the one at Deakin University, which focuses on recycling and clean energy, are not only creating jobs but also positioning Australia as a global leader in the net-zero transition. These programs are a perfect example of what happens when we back proven solutions.

Backing What Works

To truly boost our nation’s productivity, we need to scale up these successful models. This means investing in flexible, accessible education and supporting applied research that tackles real-world problems.

Let’s stop trying to patch up our economy with quick fixes. It’s time for a systemic change that empowers our workforce and rewards true innovation. The answers are already here, working at ATN Universities across the country. We just need to give them the support they deserve to build a stronger, smarter, and more prosperous Australia.
