Garmin Unveils Descent S1 Smart Buoy to Transform Dive Safety and Communication

Revolutionary Descent S1 Buoy from Garmin helps strengthen diver communication and enhances peace of mind for divers and crew.

OLATHE, Kan. — Garmin International, Inc. (NYSE: GRMN) has launched the Descent™ S1 Smart Buoy, a cutting-edge dive safety device designed to revolutionize underwater communication and tracking. Equipped with Garmin’s SubWave™ sonar networking, the buoy enables surface crews to track, monitor, and exchange messages with divers, strengthening safety protocols for both recreational and professional diving operations.

Advanced Safety and Communication Features

The Descent S1 Smart Buoy integrates seamlessly with Garmin dive computers and the Descent T2 transceiver, offering:

  • Find My Buoy: Divers can navigate back to the buoy using real-time distance and direction indicators.
  • Diver-to-Surface Messaging: Share location updates, decompression times, or early surfacing alerts directly with surface crews.
  • Extended Diver-to-Diver Communication: Preset messages can be exchanged between divers up to 100 meters underwater.
  • Remote Monitoring: Crews can track tank pressure, depth, and receive low-air alerts via the Garmin Dive™ app.
  • Surface-to-Diver Recall: Send messages or diver recalls during emergencies.
  • Post-Dive Analytics: Heatmap reviews of underwater exploration are accessible on the Garmin Dive app.

Rugged Design for Real-World Diving

Weighing just 2 pounds, the buoy is IPX8 water-rated to 10 meters and runs for 15 hours on a rechargeable lithium battery, making it suitable for weekend dive trips. It uses Wi-Fi® connectivity to maintain real-time communication up to 60 meters from the surface.
