The US Microreactor Race Gains Momentum as AI Data Centers Drive Demand for Next-Generation Nuclear Power

Three DOE-backed microreactors achieve criticality, signaling faster progress in advanced nuclear technology as data center operators seek reliable, carbon-free power for the AI era.

The United States has reached an important milestone in its advanced nuclear energy roadmap, with three Department of Energy (DOE)-backed microreactors successfully achieving criticality—the point at which a reactor sustains a controlled nuclear chain reaction. The achievement marks significant progress in the commercialization of next-generation nuclear technologies that could reshape how high-energy industries, particularly AI-powered data centers, secure reliable electricity.

The latest reactor, Unity, developed by Deployable Energy, joins demonstration reactors from Antares and Valar Atomics, both of which reached criticality earlier this year. While these systems remain experimental, they demonstrate the growing maturity of microreactor technology and the government’s commitment to accelerating advanced nuclear innovation.

Why Microreactors Matter for AI Infrastructure

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and hyperscale data centers is dramatically increasing electricity demand across the United States. Traditional grid infrastructure is struggling to keep pace, prompting technology companies to explore dedicated, always-on power sources.

Microreactors offer several advantages over conventional nuclear plants:

  • Compact, modular designs
  • Continuous carbon-free electricity generation
  • Faster deployment potential
  • Reduced land requirements
  • Enhanced energy independence for remote or industrial sites

Industry experts believe these reactors could become an attractive solution for powering AI campuses, hyperscale cloud infrastructure, defense installations, and critical industrial facilities where uninterrupted electricity is essential.

DOE Accelerates Nuclear Innovation

The three reactors are part of the DOE’s broader strategy to accelerate advanced reactor demonstrations through streamlined testing programs and close collaboration with national laboratories, particularly the Idaho National Laboratory.

Unlike traditional nuclear projects that often require more than a decade to develop, the DOE aims to significantly shorten development timelines by simplifying demonstration processes while maintaining rigorous safety standards.

Officials believe early regulatory engagement and extensive technical support can help developers transition from prototype testing to commercial deployment much faster than previous generations of nuclear technology.

Nuclear Expansion Targets Grow More Ambitious

The latest demonstrations support the U.S. government’s long-term objective of dramatically expanding domestic nuclear generating capacity.

Federal energy policy now targets approximately 400 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050, representing a substantial increase over current levels. Achieving this objective will require a combination of:

  • Large conventional reactors
  • Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)
  • Microreactors
  • Advanced reactor technologies
  • Expanded domestic nuclear fuel production

The strategy also aligns with efforts to strengthen national energy security while supporting growing electricity demand from manufacturing, AI infrastructure, and electrification.

Commercial Challenges Still Remain

Despite the technical success, industry analysts caution that reaching criticality represents only one milestone toward commercial deployment.

Several significant hurdles remain before microreactors become mainstream energy assets:

  • Regulatory licensing through the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
  • Limited availability of High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) fuel
  • Financing for commercial-scale deployments
  • Supply chain expansion
  • Manufacturing scalability
  • Long-term operational validation

Experts note that demonstration reactors validate technology but do not automatically guarantee commercial viability or widespread adoption.

Data Centers Could Become Early Adopters

Technology companies continue to evaluate nuclear energy as demand for AI computing accelerates globally. Hyperscale data centers require continuous, high-density power that renewable energy alone cannot consistently provide without significant storage capacity.

Several reactor developers are reportedly already engaged in discussions with data center operators regarding future deployments. If regulatory approvals continue to accelerate, microreactors could emerge as a practical energy solution for AI infrastructure later this decade.

As governments and technology companies invest billions in AI infrastructure, advanced nuclear power is increasingly viewed as a strategic enabler of long-term digital growth.
