Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) successfully hosted the 12th Ambassador Johnny and Angie Young Civic Leadership Summit in Salt Lake City, bringing together emerging global leaders to strengthen leadership skills and promote cross-cultural collaboration.
Building a Global Leadership Network
The Young Civic Leadership Summit (YCLS) is a biannual initiative that honors Ambassador Johnny Young and Angie Young for their contributions to diplomacy and public service. Since its inception, the program has supported over 500 young leaders in developing strategies to advance peace and address global challenges.
The summit plays a vital role in fostering a network of changemakers capable of bridging cultural and national divides.
Operational Details: Diverse Participation and Hands-On Learning
The 2026 cohort included 30 students from six countries participating through the BridgeUSA Summer Work Travel program. These fellows had been working with 25 host employers across the United States before attending the summit.

Economic and Cultural Impact
Programs like BridgeUSA contribute significantly to the U.S. economy by welcoming approximately 100,000 international students annually. These participants extend the tourism season and contribute billions of dollars while gaining firsthand experience of American culture.
At the same time, initiatives like YCLS amplify long-term impact by equipping participants with leadership skills that benefit their home countries and global communities.
Strategic Significance: Advancing Peace Through Exchange
The Young Civic Leadership Summit underscores the importance of international exchange programs in promoting mutual understanding and global cooperation. By empowering young leaders with the tools to address complex challenges, CIEE is helping shape a future driven by collaboration and shared values.
As global challenges become increasingly interconnected, initiatives like YCLS demonstrate the critical role of education, cultural exchange, and leadership development in building a more peaceful and cooperative world.
