XPENG showcased its AI-powered Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) during live road demonstrations at the UN/WP.29 Informal Working Group on Automated Driving Systems (IWG ADS) session in Shanghai.
The international forum, operating under the framework of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, convened offline in China for the first time, bringing together regulators, industry leaders, and consumer representatives to advance globally harmonized regulations for Automated Driving Systems (ADS).
From Regulatory Dialogue to Real-World Demonstration
As part of the session, XPENG moved beyond technical presentations by placing global delegates directly in the passenger seat to experience its XNGP system in live urban and highway environments.
The IWG ADS primarily gathers government and industry representatives to contribute technical expertise toward ADS regulation. XPENG has participated in the Taskforce on Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (TF ADAS) discussions on Driver Control Assistance Systems (DCAS) since 2023 and began attending IWG ADS meetings in 2025. During the Shanghai session, XPENG was the only emerging Chinese automaker to participate throughout the forum while also providing live driving demonstrations.
Delegates from Canada, the European Union, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States observed the system’s real-time perception, decision-making, and vehicle control capabilities under real traffic conditions. The demonstrations also highlighted the integrated safety framework, including driver monitoring systems, human-machine interaction logic, and safety-oriented system design.
The live trials offered regulators firsthand insight into how large-scale, data-driven AI systems perform in complex and unpredictable real-world environments. Across dense urban routes and high-speed highways, the system delivered smooth, responsive driving behavior aligned with safety expectations.
