A quiet force in technology, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy for over five decades, Suresh Shenoy’s journey mirrors the remarkable ascent of the Indian diaspora and its catalytic role in reshaping industries worldwide. In this exclusive interview, Shenoy shares lessons from the early days of computing, transformative cross-continental ventures, the rise of India’s tech sector, and his latest initiatives making scalable social impact.

The Early Chapters: From IIT Bombay to Boston

Suresh Shenoy’s story begins in 1972 as an IIT Bombay graduate, launching his career in India before seeking new horizons with a Master’s in Business from the University of Connecticut. After an entrepreneurial start with Meridyne International in Boston, his early experience included writing columns for the Boston Computer Society newsletter during the dawn of the PC era, where CPM was the dominant operating system and Microsoft was merely an idea.

The IIT Legacy and Diaspora Impact

A former president of Pan IIT USA, Shenoy has been instrumental in transforming the perception of IIT alumni in the United States. The early 2000s saw U.S. Congress formally recognize the vast contributions of IIT graduates to the American economy. The story of Indian and Asian diaspora success, Shenoy notes, spans industries and continents—from CEOs in multinationals to critical roles in healthcare and public service.

Pivots and Partnerships: From Manufacturing to Tech Services

Experiencing heavy regulatory changes and outsourcing pressures in the U.S. manufacturing sector, Shenoy pivoted from traditional industries to joined his brother who founded Information Management Consultants (IMC) in Washington, D.C., in 1989. The company’s forward momentum led to the expansion into India and a successful exit in 2015.

“We helped shape the outsourcing boom of the 1990s, riding the Y2K wave and ultimately enabling India to become a global IT powerhouse,” Shenoy recounts.

For Shenoy, the future is about leveraging technology, global networks, and the collective talents of the diaspora to solve the world’s most urgent problems—one scalable solution at a time.

WHEELS Global Foundation (WGF), founded by IIT alumni in 2013, champions “Technology-Enabled Philanthropy” to address global rural challenges in Water, Healthcare, Energy, Education, Livelihood, and Sustainability. By uniting innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders, WHEELS transforms ideas into impactful solutions—clean water, affordable healthcare, renewable energy, and accessible education. Its mission is to foster socially conscious ventures that improve lives worldwide. WHEELS is where innovation meets purpose for a sustainable future.

“Indian talent—especially from IITs—became synonymous with innovation and success, particularly in Silicon Valley. Anecdotally, if an IIT grad is among a startup’s founders, their chances of securing funding increase significantly.”

Water in Himachal Pradesh: Using geospatial data and ecosystem thinking, Wheels enabled mountain villages to recharge aquifers at a fraction of the projected cost—prompting the state government to scale the approach statewide.

Telemedicine during COVID:By equipping remote villages with smartphones and AI-powered health diagnostics, rural populations accessed free, life-saving care and government services.

Mother and Child Nutrition: Partnering with IIT Bombay, Wheels produced educational videos on crucial nutrition, translated into 20+ Indian languages, and distributed to 70,000 villages.

Wheels Global Foundation: Philanthropy at Scale

Prompted by a challenge from India’s late President Abdul Kalam to solve big real-world problems, Shenoy co-founded the Wheels Global Foundation. The acronym WHEELS stands for Water, Health, Energy, Education, Livelihood, and Sustainability—six pillars intertwined with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Bridging the U.S.-India Gap: Challenges and Opportunities

Shenoy contrasts philanthropic work in India—where public-sector collaboration abounds and social needs are vast—with regulatory complexities, liability concerns, and a privatized landscape in the U.S.

Through his life and work, Suresh Shenoy exemplifies how knowledge, networks, and a commitment to scalable purpose can drive progress across industries and borders. His story is a reminder that with vision and collaboration, the coming generations can build even greater legacies of impact.

“You cannot give what you don’t have. Work hard, build your skills, acquire experience, and only then can you give back—whether it’s your time, talent, or treasure. Give judiciously, and never lose the spirit to give back to the communities that nurture you.”
