SINBON Electronics and Swobbee have announced a collaboration to expand a citywide battery swapping network across New York City. The initiative is designed to reduce fire risks associated with e-bike charging while promoting safer and more reliable last-mile mobility solutions.
The partnership combines SINBON’s advanced connectivity and interconnect technology with Swobbee’s operational expertise and local deployment capabilities. Together, they aim to create a standardized, fire-safe infrastructure model for urban micromobility, centralizing battery charging in controlled environments rather than in residential settings.
Background and Safety Imperatives
New York City has experienced a surge in e-bike battery-related fires in recent years. Between 2019 and 2023, incidents reportedly resulted in $518.6 million in damages and losses, prompting increased scrutiny from city authorities and emergency responders. As battery storage and charging regulations evolve, centralized and compliant infrastructure solutions are becoming critical.
Swobbee initially entered the market through a city-supported pilot program launched in 2024. Following the pilot’s success, the company received approval to expand operations across all five boroughs.
Operational Expansion and Adoption
Since beginning operations in March 2025, Swobbee has installed multiple battery swapping stations in Manhattan and Jersey City. The network provides delivery riders with UL-certified batteries and 24/7 access to fully charged replacements, reducing reliance on informal or home charging setups.
To date, users have completed approximately 150,000 battery swaps, indicating strong adoption among gig economy riders. Dozens of additional stations are planned before the end of the year.
Strategic and Technological Integration
SINBON’s interconnect solutions play a central role in ensuring safe battery integration, reliable power transfer, and traceability across the network. Company executives emphasized that scalable electrification infrastructure must prioritize both operational stability and public safety.
