Autoliv, Inc. has partnered with Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. to develop an innovative airbag system for urban scooters, marking a significant advancement in two-wheeler safety technology.
The airbag will debut in the new Yamaha Tricity 300, bringing safety solutions that were traditionally available only on premium motorcycles to a broader segment of urban commuters.
Expanding Safety Beyond Traditional Vehicles
Motorcycle accidents often occur under unpredictable conditions, making rider protection a major challenge. Unlike passenger vehicles, motorcycles and scooters offer limited structural protection, increasing the need for advanced safety systems.

The newly developed airbag system is designed specifically to protect riders during frontal collisions, helping reduce the impact force experienced during an accident. The collaboration reflects Autoliv’s strategy to extend its expertise in vehicle safety beyond conventional passenger cars.
Advanced Design and Integration
The airbag module has been ergonomically integrated into the scooter’s front fairing, allowing it to deploy efficiently during a collision while maintaining the vehicle’s balance and storage space.
During an impact, the airbag absorbs the rider’s kinetic energy, reducing the risk of severe injury. Engineers designed the system to function seamlessly within the compact architecture of an urban scooter without affecting its everyday usability.
Rigorous Testing and Validation
To ensure reliability and performance, the system has undergone extensive simulations and large-scale crash testing in accordance with established safety development standards.
According to Mikael Bratt, the collaboration represents an important milestone in the company’s broader safety mission, highlighting the need to improve protection for motorcyclists who historically have had fewer safety features compared to occupants of passenger vehicles.
